Run Team Flo
Friday, 21 March 2014 22:58

Kelly is embarking on a new challenge this autumn and is hoping for your help in her aim to raise money for Cancer Research UK at the Bupa Great Birmingham Run (October 19, 2014).

Kelly was dealt a blow in March when her niece, Flo, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. As a family-orientated person, the news hit hard, but rather than feel down for herself, Kelly has decided to take action and help to raise money for their cause by running the Birmingham Half Marathon.

She said: “In March this year my niece Flo was diagnosed with leukaemia - it came as a huge surprise to watch her go from being 100mph everyday to being in bed with no desire to do anything!

“When we found out that Flo was diagnosed with Leukaemia it was like a knife through the heart, we were all absolutely devastated. But we have such a good family bond and great supportive friends we are coming together as one to fight this awful disease.”

The pair are now spending time at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital where Flo is receiving her treatment and where Kelly decided to run the half marathon. With the help of the other members of ‘RunTeamFlo’ Joanna Drinkhall, Hannah Hicks, Liz May and Laura Snow they are hoping to raise £2,500 (or more!) for Cancer Research UK.

Kelly was quick to thank her team mates: “I would just like to take the opportunity to thank the girls for coming together and help support me and my family through this difficult time and very grateful to them for helping me raise money for this great charity.

“I would really appreciate and be very thankful to people if they could donate what ever they can  to www.justgiving.com/RunTeamFlo or txt SIBS88 £5 (or how ever much they are willing to donate) to 70070?

Three Titles for Kelly

8527678175 77a29e04db_oThe 2013 National Championships took place from 1st to 3rd March and for the second year running Kelly picked up the trophy in all three events she entered.

Along with partner, Darius Knight, the Mixed Doubles was retained as they beat Paul Drinkhall and Joanna Parker in the final on Saturday evening.

Having negotiated the early rounds on Saturday, the Womens Doubles trophy was duly collected on Sunday as Kelly and Joanna beat the young pairing of Chloe White and Jessica Dawson in the final.

The Womens Singles was a hard fought affair.  Kelly battled back from 2-0 down against 14 year old Tin Tin Ho in the quarter final to progress 4-2 and then faced an even bigger battle in the semi final.  Kelly led Karina Le Fevre 3-0 but was pegged back to a deciding set.  Kelly found herself 5-9 down in the seventh set but somehow found it within herself to claw back to 10-9 ahead before finally advancing 14-12.

Kelly was up against Joanna Parker in the final and took the first two sets, dropped the third but won the fourth to move into a 3-1 lead.  Joanna then proceeded to mount a comeback and levelled at 3-3.  In another deciding seventh set, Kelly once again found her composure and after getting off to a good start kept the momentum going to lift the title by four sets to three.
